History of the University of Advancing Technology
The University
of Advancing Technology (UAT) originated as a computer-aided design (CAD)
systems consulting company and high-end computer manufacturer in 1983. Since
then, UAT has developed into a nationally recognized leader in technology
education and accredited senior-level college that provides training and
education in Multimedia, Software Engineering and Technology Commerce. UAT
offers accredited associate's, bachelor's and master's degrees.
Origins
The
University's programs were first accredited in 1987 by ACCET at the diploma and
occupational associate's level. At the time, UAT was known as the CAD Institute
and offered classes in Computer Aided Drafting. As the quality of our programs
continued to grow, the University converted to its current accrediting body,
the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), in 1992
for recognition at the junior college level. Later that year, the University
applied to ACICS to be a Senior College candidate and was granted the
opportunity in 1996. That same year, the CAD Institute began offering
educational programs outside the CAD focus. This first non-CAD program was
extremely successful and grew into UAT's Multimedia College.
The CAD
Institute name was retired in August 1996, and the college was renamed the
University of Advancing Computer Technology (UACT). In 1997, UACT launched its
Software Engineering program. In 1998, UACT moved to the present campus located
in Tempe, Arizona. Also, in 1998, UACT received approval from ACICS to offer a
Master of Science in Technology degree. In 2000, we received approval to offer
online courses.
The University of Advancing Computer Technology removed the word "computer" from its name in
2002 as a reflection of the notion that "computer technology" has evolved
beyond the personal computer to encompass all devices that communicate, manage
information and provide connections through all media, including the Internet.
Since then, the University has
continued to evolve into its current status as one of the most innovative
educational institutions anywhere. In looking toward the future, UAT continues
to identify areas of important research and scholarship on the frontiers of
advancing technology-such as Artificial Life Programming-so that its graduates are
prepared to expand the frontiers of technology by their own merits.
