Transfer Credit Policy

The University actively seeks to recognize college level academic work that was completed by its enrolling students at Council For Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) recognized accredited institutions prior to the start of their programs at UAT. Awarding transfer credit is beneficial to students for several reasons: it allows them to complete their degree in a timely manner; it is a determining factor in the amount of financial aid students are able to receive; it ensures that students are placed in a proper-level course or courses; and it helps students properly build their schedule during their first semester at UAT.

Students may transfer college credits with a grade of C (2.0) or better, Advanced Placement (AP) exams with a score of 3 or better, International Baccalaureate (IB) exams with a score of 5 or better, and most Microsoft, COMPITA and CCNA certifications to a maximum of:

  • 30 undergraduate hours for those seeking an associate's degree at the University
  • 60 undergraduate hours for those seeking a bachelor's degree at the University
  • 15 graduate hours for those seeking a master's degree at the University

Students are reminded that in order to graduate, they must meet all the graduation requirements of the University. Please refer to the Graduation Policy.

Procedure

A student who enrolled at the University prior to August 1, 2001, withdrew from the University, and then re-enrolled more than one year after he/she withdrew will be subject to the current Transfer Credit Policy. No exceptions to this provision shall be made.

Students may have their previous college level academic work evaluated as an undergraduate student or as a graduate student. If a student requests a program reduction from a bachelor’s level to an associate’s level, only 30 transfer credits will be used in the Program of Study. If a student extends his/her program from an associate’s level to a bachelor’s level, additional transfer credits from the original transcripts only may be evaluated and added to the transcript up to the limit of 60 credits.

Transfer Credit Evaluations are automatic upon submittal of official or unofficial transcripts. It is the student’s responsibility to request that official transcripts from any previously attended institutions be sent to the Registrar. Students should use the College Transcript Request document, which can be downloaded in PDF file form here. For foreign students, a course-by-course report generated by the Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc., indicating that the foreign course is college level and that the grade is the equivalent of C (2.0) or better is needed.

Unofficial transcripts are to be sent to the Acceptance Office. Although unofficial transcripts may be used to generate a Transfer Credit Evaluation, official transcripts from all previously attended institutions from which credit was awarded must be on file with the Registrar prior to the completion of a student’s first semester at UAT. Students are not required to attend courses for which they were awarded transfer credit. Students who have questions regarding their evaluation and/or transcripts should contact the Acceptance Office.

The general turn-over time for a Transfer Credit Evaluation is two business days. Students do not need to include course catalogs/descriptions, portfolios or any other additional information with their transcripts unless directed otherwise by the Acceptance Office. Upon completion of their evaluation, students will be notified of their results via email. Students who do not supply an email address to their Communication or Enrollment Coordinator and those students with invalid email addresses on file will be mailed their evaluation results through the U.S. Mail Service.

Any awarded transfer credit will remain unofficial in a student’s academic record until the student is enrolled in a program at the University and has paid the one-time $100 Transfer Credit Fee. Once a student is enrolled, the fee will be posted to his/her account. This fee is not charged on a per-class basis and is separate from the Enrollment fee. A student who does not wish to accept any awarded credits must contact his/her Enrollment Coordinator before beginning his/her first semester at UAT. Credit will remain unofficial for any courses that were “in progress” when the evaluation was completed until an updated transcript has been received by UAT and a re-evaluation has been performed.

Review

Equivalency is determined by comparing course descriptions, course titles and credit hours. Quarter credit courses are truncated by a factor of 0.67 to determine semester credit hour values.

Evaluated credits may be either accepted or denied by the University. Transfer credit, governed by a current Formal Articulation Agreement with UAT, states that the courses will have their credits approved based on the specifics of the Formal Articulation Agreement. If the course is equivalent to a course offered at the University, the Acceptance Office will award transfer credit for the course code and number of credits as offered by UAT. If the course is not equivalent to a course offered by UAT, the Acceptance Office will determine if the course is:

  • General Education: Humanities (prefix TRH), Mathematics (prefix TRM), Science (prefix TRS) or Social Sciences (prefix TRSS)
  • Evaluated on a case-by-case basis and awarded in either the Upper, Lower or Graduate divisions. A maximum of 15 undergraduate General Education hours for those seeking an associate’s degree or 36 General Education undergraduate hours for those seeking a bachelor’s degree may be applied to a student’s Program of Study.

  • General Studies Elective (prefix TRGS)
  • Evaluated on a case-by-case basis and awarded in either the Upper, Lower or Graduate divisions. A maximum of 12 undergraduate General Studies Education hours for those seeking an associate’s degree or 6 General Studies Education undergraduate hours for those seeking a bachelor’s degree may be applied to a student’s Program of Study.

  • Technical Elective (prefix TRE)
  • Evaluated on a case-by-case basis and awarded in either the Upper, Lower or Graduate divisions.

  • General Elective (prefix TRG)
  • Evaluated on a case-by-case basis and awarded in the Upper, Lower or Graduate divisions. A maximum of 6 undergraduate General Elective hours for those seeking an associate’s degree or 10 General Elective undergraduate hours for those seeking a bachelor’s degree may be applied to a student’s Program of Study.

Transfer credits will be recorded at the University according to the following guidelines:

  • The prefix (TRH, TRM, TRS, TRSS, TRGS, TRE or TRG) + the Division (100, 300, 500) + number of credits. Therefore:
  • TRH103 Transfer Credit - Humanities Lower Division - 3 Credits

TRM302 Transfer Credit - Mathematics Upper Division - 2 Credits

TRS304 Transfer Credit - Science Upper Division - 4 Credits

TRSS103 Transfer Credit - Social Science Lower Division - 3 Credits

TRE302 Transfer Credit - Technical Elective Upper Division - 2 Credits

TRG103 Transfer Credit - General Elective Lower Division - 3 Credits

    TRE503 Transfer Credit - Graduate Level - 3 Credits

UAT does not award credit for the following:

    • Any course where a grade other than an “A,” “B” or “C” was earned, excluding certifications, Advanced Placement (AP) exams or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams
    • Any course with a sub-100 level course code, unless that course corresponds directly with one of UAT’s sub-100 level courses
    • Any DANTE testing credits
    • Any CLEP exam credits
    • Any course worth less than 1 credit hour
    • Any previous work experience
    • Most military credits

    Record Process

The Acceptance Office will annotate the student’s official transcript to reflect the appropriate credits awarded. The description of courses with a prefix of “TR” will be edited to reflect the course title as reported on the transcript of the institution that awarded the original credit. Grades are not awarded in those courses for which a student receives transfer credit. Grade Point Averages for students who have received transfer credit will be computed based only on grades received for courses completed at UAT.
